This dual-strand project is designed to dismantle barriers to participation in design and engineering by targeting children and women in particular through DIY furniture fabrication and LEGO-based STEM workshops.
Strand 1: The DIY Workshop – targeting female & youth furniture design
We are seeking funding for a 5-week residency to address the traditional gender and age gap in manual creative skills.
Led by a professional tradesperson, participants with zero tool experience will be guided through the design thinking process from initial sketching and ergonomics to the physical assembly of a bespoke piece of community furniture which will be utilised in the village..
Strand 2: Brick-Builder STEM – Creative engineering for youth
The second strand utilises the medium of LEGO to deliver high-level STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education through a creative lens.
Educational Objective: Using LEGO systems (such as Spike or Technic), children will engage in “serious play” to solve architectural and engineering challenges. A “Creative” STEM Approach: Unlike traditional schooling, these workshops focus on physical building and iterative design. Participants will learn to visualise complex concepts such as structural integrity by physically manifesting them through play.
