Age 14
My favourite things are playing music and singing. I started playing music when I was 5 years old and I now play the tin whistle, concertina, piano, uilleann pipes and love to sing.
Music brings me so much happiness, and there is nothing I enjoy more than playing a tune with friends.
I am fortunate to have incredible teachers in both classical and traditional music and singing who give me so much valuable insight and guidance, helping me discover what works best for me and steering me in the right direction.
Collaboration is really important to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience it with so many talented musicians.
For the past 4 years, I’ve been a member of the Irish Concertina Orchestra with Music Generation Clare, where I’ve had incredible opportunities to perform and collaborate with talented composers, singers and musicians. Last year, we had the honour of performing a piece specially composed for the Concertina Orchestra by the legendary Bill Whelan. This summer, we’re exciting about getting to travel to Dublin to record the piece – it’s going to be so special and I can’t wait for the experience!
I also play with the Ennis Youth Trad Orchestra, where I get to perform with talented young musicians from all around Clare. I’ve really loved this experience this year as I’ve met some fabulous musicians my age who love music as much as me and I know I’ll have friends for life.
Despite facing challenges with Juvenile Arthritis, which affected my ability to play some instruments, I’ve continued to pursue music. It hasn’t been easy, but overcoming those challenges has made me more determined to keep going. I’ve been very lucky to have been recognised for my musical abilities and I’ve won several music and singing competitions.
Being creative makes me feel like I can truly be myself, express myself without caring what anyone else thinks, and it helps me escape from anxiety. It’s such a rewarding feeling, and it’s amazing to learn new skills and connect with others through music.
For me the best thing about Cruinniú na nÓg is that it’s an amazing opportunity to express yourself, try new things, and explore what you love. You get to be curious, discover new talents, and maybe even find your true passion – but most of all, you get to have fun!
