Hazelwood Sculptures: Restoring a Legacy

  • Workshop

The Hazelwood Sculpture Project celebrates the revival of four original wooden sculptures created during the landmark 1985 Hazelwood Sculpture Symposium, a moment that helped shape Sligo’s rich artistic heritage. This new phase brings together original artists and successors to restore the surviving works and honour their legacy.

Eileen Mac Donagh is restoring both Diarmuid & Gráinne Gate, which she created during the 1985 symposium, and The Chariot Driver, originally carved by the late James McKenna. Jackie McKenna returns to restore her piece The Wood Gatherer, while Finn Conlon restores Sos Sliabh an Dá Éan, continuing the legacy of his father, the late Fred Conlon.

When complete, three of the sculptures will return to the Hazelwood trails, renewing a unique cultural legacy in the landscape where they were first created. The Chariot Driver will be considered for preservation in a new indoor location, marking and protecting the lasting contribution of James McKenna’s work.
