Waterways Alive: Exploring Biodiversity through Art and Forest School

“Waterways Alive” is a series of forest school-inspired creative workshops for children aged 5–12, exploring the biodiversity of our local waterways. Through hands-on outdoor learning, children will discover the rich variety of life that exists in, on, and above rivers, ponds, and wetlands. The program encourages curiosity, environmental awareness, and creative expression.

Taking place over three Saturday afternoons in May, each two-hour session focuses on a different theme: aquatic life beneath the surface, plants and animals that float or live on the water, and creatures that interact with waterways from above, such as birds (éanacha) and insects (feithidí). Children will engage in nature-based activities including pond dipping, sketching, sculpture, nature printing, storytelling (scéalaíocht), and collaborative artwork.

Workshop dates:

Saturday, May 17th, 14:00–16:00
Saturday, May 24th, 14:00–16:00
Saturday, May 31st, 14:00–16:00

Location: Tannery Park, Rathangan, Co. Kildare

Participants may attend one, two, or all three sessions. Artworks created during the workshops will be displayed in a community exhibition on June 7th, open to children, families, and the wider public. Exhibition details coming soon!
