Join us for a series of participatory music and sound workshops specially designed for Deaf and CODA children, facilitated by violinist Jane Hackett and circus performer Olivier Dietrich. These 45-minute to 1-hour workshops will take place at Deaf Village Ireland in Cabra as part of Cruinniú na nÓg.
Children will explore the world of music through movement, sensory materials, and interaction with the violin. They’ll learn about important musical elements like rhythm, dynamics, phrasing and articulation. The workshop will feature four interactive music ‘stations,’ each representing a different aspect of musical composition. These stations will allow children to engage with music in a hands-on way, feeling the vibrations and experiencing the sound through tactile elements.
The session will begin with a performance from the facilitators, combining physical movement and live violin-playing, followed by an exploration of each music station. At the first station, children will engage directly with the violin, feeling the vibrations of the strings. The ‘musical phrasing’ station will feature creative materials like dust sheets and spinning plates. The ‘dynamics station’ will introduce various vibrational inputs, and the ‘rhythmic station’ will use Dalcroze exercises to connect movement and rhythm.
