First Steps to Filmmaking for Young Deaf Community Members

Workshop

Teen creators who are Deaf or hard of hearing can jump into First Steps to Filmmaking at Gaelscoil Athí on 6 June, with fun mini sessions beforehand to help everyone get comfortable with visual storytelling, cameras and equipment, then spend the morning exploring the many roles in Film and TV, planning a simple story and sketching an eight shot storyboard before diving into an afternoon of hands on filming and basic editing; we will be working closely with producer Sean Herlihy and filmmaker Darwin Zapata, with special guests including LUMO TV director Cathy Heffernan and Deaf actors sharing their own career journeys, all leading to a celebratory screening where everyone gets to see their finished films shine as part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2026. The workshop is open to Athy Sing and Sign members, teenagers in Athy, Kildare and surrounding areas, and also to WAVE, the new youth club in Deaf Village Ireland for Deaf, hard of hearing and CODA young people.
