The Big Dig at Carlow Museum

  • Workshop

Carlow County Museum presents the ever popular ‘The Big Dig’ by the School of Irish Archaeology. Using a replica ‘Viking House’ allows children, aged 5-12 years, an opportunity to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist by learning how to excavate. Then view the Museum’s archaeology display in the company of Museum staff to discover the Museum’s smallest object which dates from the Iron Age, making it 2,000 years old!

‘The Big Dig’ incorporates the dig experience with educational, engaging and interactive activities throughout the workshop. During their dig for Viking treasures and artefacts, children also learn about the lifestyles of their Viking ancestors, guided by professional working archaeologists. The knowledgeable staff will demonstrate and explain how the objects uncovered during the dig were used in day-to-day life during the Viking era. Book early as places are limited for each 45-minute workshop. This is an outdoor activity so please dress appropriately.

Time: From 11:00am to 4:00pm with each workshop starting on the hour, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm. Pre Booking essential.
